New Bedford wildlife control Tip of the Month:

HOW TO GET WILD ANIMALS OUT OF A WALL
Most humans would be scared to live in a tiny space with little lighting and poor ventilation, but animals don’t really mind. Rodents can live in small gaps between an internal and external wall for months – they love to stay there because it is dark and quiet. Most animals can stay in walls and can survive there naturally. However, some others get there accidentally – they fall into the cavity from the roof space or attic. For instance, rodents can build nests on the floor of a wall hole, while opossums and baby raccoons can mistakenly fall into these gaps.

Discovering the Entry Holes
When trying to get rid of wild animals in a wall, the first thing you need to do is find all entry points along the bottom of the wall, both externally and internally. This will help you determine how the wild animals enter and leave the wall. Also, finding the entry/exit holes will make trapping the animal less difficult – you’ll learn how the animals enter and exit the wall and know the right time to close all the holes. If it looks like the animal fell into the wall, you’d have to go up the loft to determine how the animals enter and leave the place.

Extracting Animals Stuck in the Wall
If you look carefully, you may just see the animals from the top of the cavity in the roof. In a situation like this, all you have to do is reach down with an extendable reaching stick and pull up the wild animal. After extracting the animal, place it in a box for removal and relocation. However, it is important to note that the job won’t always be this easy – some animals may hide in dark corners and you may not see them from the top. In cases like that, you have to cut a square in the drywall close to where you hear the wild animals scratching, and then grab them with your hand. After doing that, you can get rid of the animal and fix the drywall. Though the process may be rigorous and stressful, it is quite better than having foul odors pervade your home because of a dead carcass in the wall.

Using Traps to Catch the Wild Animals
After determining what kind of animal you’re dealing with, the next step is to trap them. If you find out that you have rats or mice living in the wall, you can capture them by laying traditional snap traps which are usually very efficient. The type of bait you use matters a lot – baits like cat food, meat, and peanut butter usually bring the best results. Another important thing to consider while laying traps is location. Make sure you position the traps in areas where the animals move frequently. If you have rats in the house, you’ll find brown smears on the walls of the areas they visit the most. The brown smear comes from the fur of the rat.

The Poison Method
Another way to get rid of wild animals in the wall is to kill them with poison. This method is used by most homeowners. While it is effective, it creates a new problem while solving an old one. The thing is, poison actually kills the animal in the wall. But the problem is that the animal may die in a hidden location and you may not be able to find it. The decomposing carcass can cause air pollution in your home and also attract different kinds of wildlife.
